Manatee Habitat for Humanity welcomed community members, local leaders, and supporters to the OurStory Mixer, an evening dedicated to celebrating Black stories, fostering meaningful conversations, and advancing opportunities for Black homeownership in Manatee County.

The event featured an inspiring panel discussion that explored the lasting influence of Black leaders in education, sports, history, and business while examining the vital roles that civic engagement, land ownership, and homeownership play in building stronger, more equitable communities. Guests left with a deeper understanding of how these issues continue to shape the future of our region and why expanding access to homeownership remains an essential step toward closing the racial wealth gap.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our distinguished panelists—Xavier Omar Edwards, Ray Bellamy, Reggie Bellamy, Susie Copeland, and Carla Washington Range—for sharing their personal experiences, insights, and expertise. Their thoughtful perspectives created an engaging and impactful conversation that inspired attendees and encouraged meaningful dialogue.
A special thank you also goes to our moderator, Michelle Grimsley Shindano, whose thoughtful questions and skilled facilitation helped bring each conversation to life.
Thanks to the generosity of everyone who attended and supported the event, the OurStory Mixer raised $1,572 to benefit Manatee Habitat’s Advancing Black Homeownership Initiative. Every dollar raised helps create pathways to affordable homeownership for Black families in our community while supporting our efforts to address the racial homeownership and wealth gaps.
Events like the OurStory Mixer demonstrate the power of bringing people together—not only to celebrate history and culture, but also to take meaningful action toward a more equitable future. We are grateful to everyone who joined us, contributed to the conversation, and invested in the dream of homeownership for local families.
