This year, Manatee County Habitat for Humanity expanded Martin Luther King Jr. Day into a meaningful weekend-long experience—one that honored Dr. King’s legacy through celebration, connection, and action.

Our weekend began on Friday, January 16, 2026, when we were proud to attend the Palmetto Youth Center’s MLK Banquet. Representing Manatee Habitat were Board Chair Michelle Grimsley Shindano, Director of Homeowner Services Kaveecia Moore, and two of our Habitat homeowners. The evening was a powerful reminder of the importance of community, leadership, and uplifting voices that reflect the impact of homeownership and opportunity.

On Saturday, our team joined the Palmetto Youth Center’s MLK Parade, themed “Mission Possible: Empowering our Youth to Dream Big, Act Bold”—values that align closely with Habitat’s mission. We proudly decorated and showcased a Ford Mustang, generously donated for the day by AutoNation Ford of Bradenton, to represent our Advancing Black Homeownership Initiative (ABH) and our broader homeownership program. Our presence in the parade celebrated not only Dr. King’s vision, but also the tangible work being done locally to create pathways to stability and generational wealth through homeownership.

We concluded the weekend by putting our faith into action on Monday, MLK Day, by hosting our own Day of Service. Led by our Advancing Black Homeownership Task Force, more than 15 dedicated volunteers came together to help repair a home for a local family in need. This day embodied Dr. King’s call to service, meeting community needs through compassion, teamwork, and hands-on support.

Thank you to everyone who joined us throughout the weekend to honor Dr. King’s incredible legacy and help carry forward his message of service, unity, and love. Together, we are building more than homes—we are building hope and stronger communities.
