This April, Manatee Habitat is joining our nation in celebrating Fair Housing Month!
Throughout US history, there are moments that stand as beacons of progress and reminders of the ongoing journey toward equality. One such milestone is the Fair Housing Act (FHA) of 1968, a pivotal federal law that aimed to crack down on the barriers of discrimination in housing. Enacted on April 11, 1968, just days after the tragic assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the FHA was a promise of hope and a testament to the collective will for change.
As we commemorate Fair Housing Month, we not only honor the legacy of those who fought for equality but also reaffirm our commitment to ensuring fair and equal access to housing for all. The Fair Housing Act of 1988 has expanded over the years to prohibit discrimination in housing because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability, and familial status. The FHA serves as a guardian of justice, ensuring that no one faces discrimination in the sale, rental, or financing of housing.

At the heart of Fair Housing Month lies a profound message: every person deserves a place to call home, free from prejudice or bias. That’s where Manatee Habitat comes in. Habitat’s mission to build homes and communities transcends mere construction; it is a commitment to fostering inclusivity and opportunity for all. And guess what? You can be part of it too!
We invite you to join us in our mission. Whether through volunteering your time, making a donation, or spreading awareness, there are countless ways to get involved. Together, we can build a future where fair housing isn’t just a dream but a reality for all.
This Fair Housing Month, let’s stand together in solidarity, championing equality and justice in housing.
