Meet Nakyra
Despite a childhood marked by financial hardship and frequent moves, Nakyra remained determined to build a better future for herself. She graduated from high school, earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from Florida Memorial University and immediately began working in her field, driven by a passion for helping others. After stepping away from her career during her pregnancy, she earned a medical technician certificate before returning to helping others as a behavioral technician.
Despite her education, career accomplishments and determination, homeownership still seemed out of reach. Living in a crowded, multigenerational household with her young son, Namir, Nakyra dreamed of a place where they could have room to grow, find peace and build a stable future together.
This year, that dream became a reality when Nakyra moved into her Habitat home. Surrounded by family and friends at her dedication ceremony, she celebrated the pride of achieving the American dream of homeownership. Reflecting on what this milestone means to her, Nakyra shared:
“More than anything, this is proof to myself that even through the struggle, the sacrifices, and the uncertainty, I was able to build something solid for us. A home wouldn’t just be a house to me — it would be peace, pride, and a place where my son and I can finally breathe and feel grounded.”
